New Year’s Nuptials

What better way to ring in the New Year than with a wedding?  This year, plenty of celebrity couples chose to tie the knot during the New Year’s holiday.  Here are four couples who kicked off the year with brand new marriages and my take on their wedding day style.

Shania Twain and her husband, Frederic, looked lovely together at their New Year's Day celebration. Their black and white outfits suited each other perfectly. Shania's gown, bought at a small Swiss boutique, was simple and elegant and her long veil added glamour to the ensemble. -- Image courtesy of People magazine

NASCAR driver Kyle Busch and new wife, Samantha Sarcinella, had a lavish New Year's affair. Though this picture only shows the top half of Samantha's Michael Cinco dress, in my mind that is the better half! The neckline on this dress was elegant and sophisticated and is my absolute favorite of the four New Year's gowns I'm showing here. Valerie Bertinelli and Tom Vitale invited friends over on New Year's Day for a surprise wedding ceremony! After stating plans to wear black last year, Valerie instead selected a turquoise David Meister gown. I must admit, I was somewhat upset with her decision. The look doesn't do her fabulous figure justice and looked sort of slapped together. Her Jimmy Choo shoes, while amazing in their own right, didn't suit the ensemble well, in my opinion. --- Image courtesy of People Magazine

Kellie Pickler and husband, Kyle Jacobs, eloped on New Year's to celebrate their love with a beautiful, intimate beachside ceremony. Kellie's Badgley Mischka ballgown suited her figure perfectly and Kyle's laidback attire was just right for a beach wedding! --- Image courtesy of tkatla.com

Back in Black

This fall, Jenny Craig’s most adorable spokesperson, Valerie Bertinelli, will be heading to the altar for the second time to wed her boyfriend, Tom Vitale, a businessman with whom she has been involved since 2004.  The pair plans to wed in Italy with only one witness in an intimate, private ceremony.  Bertinelli has told People magazine that she will “be wearing black” in contrast to the white confection that she wore to her 1981 wedding to Eddie Van Halen.

As a huge fan of Audrey Hepburn, I am also a huge fan of the classic little black dress (like the ones she so often donned on and off the big screen).  So, hearing that Ms. Bertinelli was in the market for a little black dress of her own, I took it upon myself to choose a few pieces that I think will suit her well.  I decided to pick out some dresses from the Jim Hjelm Occasions collection since the pieces are sweet, fun, and all short in length, so as to flatter the petite 5’2″ figure of Bertinelli.

This style would be my choice if I were to get married in a little black dress. However, with Bertinelli's figure, I would lean towards the other more form-fitting pieces that will better showcase her figure -- courtesy of jlmcouture.com

Jim Hjelm Occasions pieces generally start at $250 and tend to hover around the $300 mark.  For a cheaper solution for bridesmaids, I suggest Wtoo Bridesmaids collection by Watters.  Pieces start around $180.  The look shown below can be purchased for $192 at bestbridalprices.com.

These pieces are not only great options for Valerie Bertinelli’s wedding attire, they are also perfect for the bride who wishes to outfit her bridesmaids in black  — be it for a black & white themed wedding or just because black truly does look great on everyone!
